'Kats outscore La Joya Huskies in first controlled scrimmage, meet Weslaco East, here, Thurs.

Submitted by Coach Steve Cantu

The varsity Bearkats kicked off their 2008 football pre-season at La Joya with a 5-2 scrimmage victory over first year 4-A Lincoln Juarez. A good mixture of run and pass lead to over 500 yards of offense. Quarterback Cippy Villareal had two rushing scores (70,8) and 2 passing scores (70, 43). Brandon Pines busted loose for 70 yard touchdown and Dusty Alejo was on the end of both T.D. strikes. The Bearkat defense anchored by Gilbert Hernandez, John Michael Rodriguez, Rolly Cantu and George Ledezma looked good as everyone played to try and earn a spot on this year's squad. The Bearkats take on Weslaco East this Thursday in a scrimmage at home. The freshmen will play at 5:00 followed by the J.V. at 6:00 and the varsity take the field at 7:00.

The J.V. Bearkats held off Lincoln Juarez to a tune of 3-2 during a 35 play scrimmage format at La Joya. Robert Galvan, Justin Duran and quarterback Bo Moreno accounted for the three scores on the ground. The defense held their own vs the 4-A Huskies, Armando Rebeles, Carlo Rodriguez, Waylon Cortez, and A.J. Cavazos provided a spark when the defense needed a stop.

Congratulations to our freshman football team on their victory over La Joya Huskies with a score of 2-1. The offense was led by Alex Montalvo and Eddie Orozco, both scoring touchdowns. The defense had a great goal line stance, holding the Huskies on four consecutive plays at the 3 yard line to turn the ball over. The freshmen will be playing Weslaco East on Thursday, Aug. 21, at 5 p.m. at Burnett Stadium.
