Joint meeting of South Texas and Gulf Coast Assns. of SWCDS in Corpus Christi

TEMPLE, TX - A joint meeting of the South Texas Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts (STASWCDS) and the Gulf Coast Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts (GCASWCDS) will be held September 30, at the Congressman Solomon P. Ortiz International Center in Corpus Christi. Registration for the meeting will begin at 9:00 a.m.

Following registration, conservation district directors representing 38 soil and water conservation districts in the Gulf Coast Prairie, Coastal Sandy Plains and South Texas Brush Country regions of the state will tour the Port of Corpus Christi to learn about the waterborne commerce of the navigation district and its operation as a public corporation.

Following the tour of the Port of Corpus Christi, the SWCD directors are expected to receive updates on national and state soil and water conservation issues from Jose Dodier, Area III member and chairman of the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board (TSSWCB), Ben Bono, Director of the Association of Texas Soil and Water Conservation Districts, Area III; and Tomas Dominguez Area III Assistant State Conservationist USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service.

Other SWCD officials invited to present reports include Guillermo Benavides, Past President of the ATSWCDS and John Lloyd-Reilley, Manager of the Kika de la Garza Plant Materials Center located near Kingsville.

Sixteen soil and water conservation districts in the Gulf Coast Frame region of the state are members of the GCASWCDS. Counties which the SWCDS serve include Harris, Chambers, Galveston, Brazoria, Fort Bend, Colorado, Wharton, Matagorda, Jackson, Lavaca, DeWitt, Victoria, Calhoun, Refugio, San Patricio, Goliad and Karnes Counties.

Twenty-Two soil and water conservation districts in the Coastal Sandy Plains and South Texas Brush Country regions of the state are members of the STASWCDS. Counties which the SWCDS serve include Zavala, Frio, Atascosa, Dimmit, La Salle, McMullen, Live Oak, Bee, Refugio, San Patricio, Nueces, Jim Wells, Duval, Webb, Zapata, Jim Hogg, Brooks, Kleberg, Kenedy, Willacy, Cameron, Hidalgo and Starr Counties.
