The $12 million development, called Casitas Los Olmos, will have two and three bedroom and a few four bedroom units and is a project of the Community Development Corp. of Brownsville.

It’s being built on an 8-acre property CDCB bought on FM 3168 just across the Raymondville high school.

Nick Mitchell-Bennett, the corporation executive director, said the loan deal was recently closed.

But the anticipated start of the construction was delayed until last week.

Mitchell-Bennett said the project has taken longer than expected because it is backed by the U.S. Housing & Urban Development agency.

The housing project obtained a 90-percent tax credit package.

The property, however, is in a low-lying area so they have to follow some environmental regulations.

Mitchell-Bennett said some areas will have to be filled with dirt and that everything will be done right without disturbing any property owner.

The development calls for a community clubhouse, a playground, walking paths and a trail and a pavilion with barbecue grills and picnic tables.

Mitchell-Bennett said a ground breaking will be after the holiday season, sometime in January.

He said rental fees for each unit will depend on size and a renter’s income.

The fees will range from $200 to $700 a month.

Even though completion of the housing project is about 12 month away, CDCB will have agreements ready as early as May 2016.

Andy Chavez, the city’s building inspector, said Casitas Los Olmos has submitted all the paperwork for the construction project.

This is the latest project going up in Raymondville.

A new CVS Pharmacy is under construction on Hidalgo Avenue and will open in early 2016.

Tractor Supply Co. is doing preliminary work where it will open a store reportedly in the old WalMart location.

And the new Holiday Executive Inn will open early in 2016.
