It has a walking trail, ball parks, a basketball court, a concession stand, bleachers, a skate park and even an illuminated score board donated by VTX1.

Although teams from several towns have been using the park for baseball and softball games for several months, the park was officially unveiled during a ceremony held last Wednesday.

City, business, school district and county leaders and members of the community gathered on Wednesday at the park described by some as one of a kind.

Mayor Gilbert Gonzales and City Commissioner Ezequiel Cavazos said the park is for the public’s use and urged them to take care of such a beautiful place.

Texas Sen. Eddie Lucio Jr., DBrownsville, who represents District 27, said naming the park after country veterans is something special.

“Let’s continue to work together,” he said. “Willacy County has always been a jewel in the Valley. It’s a wonderful place to be and to raise a family.”

City Manager Eleazar “Yogi” Garcia said the park is a dream come true that has been in the works for some time.

The $1.2 million park was built in the west part of a town Gonzales described as a one of a kind south of San Antonio.

Alex Leal, a former high school coach, said he used to come by to watch baseball games in this part of town more than 50 years ago.

“To come here and see what I saw today is totally awesome,” he said.

Later in the afternoon the Community Against Substance Abuse, or CASA, met at the skate park and distributed about 50 helmets and four skate boards to local youngsters.

The equipment was donated by the Texas Department of Health and Human Services.
