Lonnie Correa, former city mayor, commissioner, dies at 54

Orlando “Lonnie” Correa Orlando “Lonnie” Correa Orlando “ Lonnie” Correa, a former mayor and commissioner for the city of Raymondville, has died. He was 54.

Correa served in public life as city mayor from 2006 through 2015 and as city commissioner from 1999 through 2005.

He was also president of the Economic Development Corp. of Raymondville.

Correa was a volunteer fire fighter and worked for the local school district and in San Benito for many years as teacher, counselor, principal and superintendent.

Police Chief Uvaldo Zamora said he has known Correa for a longtime.

“He was my compadre,” he said, using the Spanish word people use for several things. “He was our son’s godfather.”

Zamora said it saddens him just to think and to know Correa is no longer around.

“ It has been a sad weekend for Raymondville,” the police chief said. “We are going to miss him.

City Manager Eleazar “Yogi” Garcia said he had known Correa during all his life.

“He was a good mayor and a good friend,” he said. “ He will certainly be missed.”
