Planning for the 43rd annual Port Mansfield Fishing Tournament, to be held July 27- 30 is going full throttle, organizers from the Port Mansfield Chamber of Commerce said.

Problems with air conditioning and electrical service that plagued the event in recent years have been fixed and this year’s event will be more enjoyable and distraction-free, according to committee member Mary Ann Whitley.

Tournament spokesman Eric Sauls, a local fishing guide, said participation has increased the past three years and an even larger number of entries is expected this year.

“We’re getting better and better,” he said. “So far, it’s looking like we’ll have a really good event this year. We have some good sponsors, they’ve donated some fine items for the auction and we’ll have a really good barbecue and we’re expecting a good turnout.”

“Electrical problems have also plagued performances by bands in recent years, but American Electric Power has upgraded electrical service at the chamber’s building to not only accommodate the new air conditioning system, but also the band and its amplifiers and public address system,” Sauls and Whitley said.

In fact, AEP has upgraded electrical service for all of Port Mansfield. “We have had some long blackouts out here the past few years but now things will be better,” she said.

On Thursday, July 27, registration will be from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m.; hospitality will be offered from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.; and the Captain’s Meeting will be held at 8 p.m.

“Because of silted condition of channels, large boats will still have to weigh in at South Point Marina in Port Isabel. “We’re trying to get some government funding to take care of the dredging we need to have done,” Sauls said.

On Friday, July 28, bay and offshore fishing starts at 6 a.m., with the Piggy Perch contest for younger anglers to be from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. The Piggy Perch Awards Ceremony will be at noon.
