18th Annual Wild in Willacy begins Thursday

It all begins Thursday with the children’s program at 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. with all Willacy County fourth graders participating.

Educational presentations by Operation Game Thief with Texas Parks and Wildlife, U.S. Fish and Wildlife presenters such as the National Resource Conservation System, and U.S. Department of Agriculture, who will have representatives on hand to make presentations on wildlife and conservation programs.

On Friday, tours to Punta del Monte, East Salt Lake and Hilltop Gardens will be offered throughout the day by reservation. Tours are sold out to Punta del Monte, but there is limited space available on the East Salt Lake and Hilltop Gardens tours.

On Saturday, a festival at the Willacy County courthouse grounds will feature many activities for young and old.

A beautiful pumpkin patch for the family, a 5k run/walk, craft and food vendors will be featured, along with a Pumpkin Walk, a Kid’s Korral, along with pumpkin decorating and boot decorating contests will be offered.

At 11 a.m., county officials will unveil a historic marker for the 1920s-vintage courthouse, the first step for the long-anticipated restoration project for the well-known landmark.

A community cook-off will include pan de campo, beans, chicken and fajitas. There is still room for more competitors.

Live entertainment will include Leslie Blasing, The Mr. Whiskey Band, Grupo Invazzion and Saul Cantu and the River Bandits. Some local performers will also be on hand.
