SEBASTIAN - Alejandro C. Chavez, 101, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 2, 2017 in Sebastian, TX. Born November 26, 1916 to Jose Maria and Guadalupe Chavez, he was raised in Lasara, TX before moving to Sebastian, TX where he resided until his death at his residence.

He is preceded in death by his wife Ester S. Chavez. He is survived by his children: Juanita Quesada of Mercedes, Alejandro (Elvia) Chavez, Jr. of Rio Hondo, Florinda Guadalupe Trevino of Harlingen, Olivia (George) Tovar of Sebastian, Beto (Minerva) Chavez of Sebastian, Modesta (Roy) Zamora of Houston, Diego (Lupita) Chavez of Harlingen, Eluterio (Rosa) Chavez of Sebastian, Zoila (Hector) Mendez of Sebastian, Roque (Enedelia) Chavez of Sebastian, Isabel (Reyes) Loya of Lyford, Juan (Blanca) Espinoza of California, Nick (Alma) Espinoza of Harlingen, Alejandrina (Victor) Osegueda of Lyford, Mary Cavazos of Harlingen, Eva (Aurelio) Meza of Lyford, Josefina Margarita Cantu of Lasara, and Esmeralda (Frank) Rangel of Sebastian; brother: Romolo (Lydia) Chavez of Lasara; brothers-in-law: Robert and Benito Salinas of Raymondville; 66 grandchildren; 150 great grandchildren; and 44 great-great grandchildren.

He owned and operated Chavez Groceries on Business 77 (Sebastian, TX) from 1940-1970. He was a farmer most of his life and worked for Herman Cramer, Jack Funk, and Sebastian Cotton & Grain. In 1946, he was a horse racing jockey and played for the original Sebastian Whitewings baseball team. He was the last survivor of the 1946 team. He cooked for the Funk families during hunting season and enjoyed raising pigs, calves, goats, and chickens. He started the tradition of Pig-Out in 1953, which has brought together family and friends. To honor and remember him, this tradition will continue.

Visitation was held on Monday, December 4, 2017 from 9:00 a.m. till 9:00 p.m. with a holy rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Good Shepherd Funeral Home. A funeral mass will be held today, December 5, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church with burial to follow at Chavez Cemetery.

Honored to serve as pallbearers will be his sons: Alejandro Jr., Beto, Diego, Roque, Eluterio Chavez, and Fabian Olivarez. Honorary pallbearers will be Nick and Juan Espinoza.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to the Merida Health Care Group nurses and staff.
