DPS trooper escapes serious injury

by Allen Essex

A Texas Department of Public Safety patrol car was involved in a three-vehicle crash at 2:35 a.m. Tuesday as the trooper was inspecting a tractor- trailer rig on the southbound frontage road of I-69E just south of Spur 56.

DPS spokesman Lt. Johnny Hernandez said preliminary information is that the trooper was performing a commercial safety inspection of a blue Peterbilt tractor and a Great Dane trailer when a gray Chevrolet Impala struck the trooper’s car and the tractor trailer rig.

Willacy County Emergency Medical Service Director Frank Torres said the woman driving the car and the truck driver were transported by ambulance to Valley Baptist Medical Center for treatment of injuries.

The DPS trooper declined to be transported by ambulance and was apparently not seriously injured, Torres said.

Texas DPS will continue to investigate the crash, Hernandez said.
