Lyford daycare death ruled “natural causes”

by Allen Essex

A final autopsy report has cleared workers at a Lyford daycare center of any wrongdoing related to the Feb. 14 death of a 9-month-old baby girl.

City Police Chief Andy Maldonado said the autopsy states the girl died of a medical condition called “interstitial pneumonitis” and pulmonary hemorrhage.

The child died of natural causes, the police chief said. The preliminary autopsy report also found no signs of trauma.

“There was no foul play, no criminal act,” Maldonado said of the death that occurred at Kidsville Learning Center.

He had earlier stated that the case would be treated as a homicide but medical findings have ruled out any abuse. No charges will be filed against anyone.

Lyford police were assisted in the investigation by Texas Rangers and the Willacy County Sheriff’s Department.

The daycare center at first closed for three days and reopened and has stayed open since.
