Michael Gonzales works three jobs: lawn care, contractor for the Raymondville Chronicle and cashier at Ed’s #3 on 7th Street.

On Saturday night he was not scheduled to work at Ed’s #3, however, the convenience store was short-handed so he was called in to work the 4 p.m. - 1 a.m. shift. At approximately 9:40 p.m. a man with his face concealed by a red bandana charged the counter waving a pocketknife and demanded “I ain’t messing around. Give me the money.”

Martin Mendoza was completing a purchase at the time of the robbery. He was picked up Monday for questioning.

Gonzales fearing for his life cooperated by saying, “Back up, I’ll give you the money.” He estimates the individual got away with more than $500.

“I’ve got work to do and bills to pay. I’m not looking for trouble,” said Gonzales. “This was a setback for me and a rude awakening of the dangers out there.”

Clear video footage inside the store caught the entire incident. Police are using it to identify the individuals, as well as, footage from a surveillance camera next door at Danny’s Diesel that reportedly captured the individuals talking outside shortly before the robbery and after, speeding away.

Tommy Gomez with the Raymondville Police Department says they are still investigating the robbery and have a couple of suspects and warrants.
