Mayor Gilbert Gonzales Mayor Gilbert Gonzales Mayor Gilbert Gonzales said he is on the road to recovery after suffering a heart attack July 13 and plans to gradually increase involvement in his duties.

The 65-year-old Raymondville mayor and retired businessman said he is already looking forward to resuming his role at City Hall.

“I’m recuperating, I’m still weak, but I’m moving around and doing some light things on my own this week.”

Because he still has some chest pain, he has had to limit sleeping in bed, the mayor said.

“I’ve been sleeping in my recliner for a week.”

But he returned to his office at City Hall on Friday, he said.

“I spent about an hour and a half at City Hall yesterday (Friday),” he said. “It looks like the fruits of what I’m doing are starting to come in,” he said of several business prospects he hopes to announce soon.

He also heard reports from staff members and was updated on city projects, the mayor said.

He planned to visit his cardiologist on Monday to find out how long it might take him to fully recover, Gonzales said.

“I do appreciate everyone’s concerns and prayers,” Gonzales said. “I’m going to be OK.”
